Such facilities usually provide in-house individual, group and family counseling and the full range of other secondary services that are related to child abuse including referral to appropriate resources.

    Mental Health ServicesOrissa Healy House is an 8-bed crisis community residence program licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health, serving male and female children aged 5 through 12 who are experiencing a situational crisis and have a mental health diagnosis at the time of admission. The goal of the program is to restore family equilibrium and avoid psychiatric hospitalization by providing up to three weeks of out-of-home placement for the child. The children work on individualized treatment goals and return to their parents after three weeks time.     Protective ServicesChildren ages 4-13 who come to the Schaffer Children's Diagnostic Shelter often require immediate removal from an unsafe living situation and must be in the custody of the Department of Social Services. This 8-bed shelter provides these children a stable place to reside while our professional clinicians evaluate the child and family and recommend the most appropriate long term living situation for the child. Services include referral to the shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, psychological evaluation of children and their families, family assessment, psychological testing of parents upon request, psychiatric evaluation, comprehensive psychosocial assessment, behavioral assessment, medication assessment and management, and permanent life plan recommendations for the child.
